Help me to help you – Best Practice Advice for Contacting Me

A lot of the work that I do as your local MP is to help constituents with case work.

I receive hundreds of emails, letters and telephone calls each week, and I have put together this guide to help constituents bring their cases to me in the most effective and efficient way possible. I hope that by following this guidance, my staff and I can process your correspondence more quickly, and hopefully this will result in earlier resolution of your case.

For cases involving Government Departments such as HMRC (Tax, Tax Credits and Inland Revenue), the Child Support Agency (CSA), National Health Service (NHS), Charnwood Borough or Leicestershire County Councils, UK Border Agency (UKBA), and Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) Agencies like the Job Centre please provide:

  • Your full postal address/contact details.
  • Reference numbers, National Insurance Number (if applicable) and any other reference information.
  • Brief background.
  • Main concerns.
  • Your objectives or desired outcomes.
  • Copies of any relevant correspondence.

For Ombudsman Cases:

Please contact the relevant Ombudsman’s Office in the first instance to seek their advice on how to lodge your complaint. Generally the complaint form will need to be completed by you, and then signed by me prior to its submission. Legal Matters:

As a Member of Parliament, I have no legal power by which to compel the authorities, and I may not get involved in constituents legal matters. Consequently, you will need to take such matters up with a qualified solicitor or seek the advice of the Citizen’s Advice Bureau.

For political/policy matters:

Please write to me at my London Office including your full name, contact and postal details, a summary of your thoughts / comments on the specific policy and copies of any relevant documents if required.
