Support for Action for Stroke month

May 15, 2012

Alun Cairns MP recently attended the successful ‘Sip for Stroke’ coffee morning in Dinas Powys in support of the Stroke Association.

May 2012 is ‘Action on Stroke Month’ when Stroke Association launches its new Life after Stroke campaign to highlight the impact of stroke on people’s lives to which the Vale MP was keen to lend his support.

The President of the local Stroke Support Group, Dr Gladys Tinker OBE, talked about stroke awareness, prevention measures and the importance of seeking immediate medical attention when a stroke occurs.  The importance of checking blood pressure was emphasised by enabling guests to undergo such checks. There was also the opportunity to find out more about the services available to stroke survivors in Dinas Powys and the Vale.

Mr Cairns said:

“I was so glad to accept Penny Evans’s kind invitation to join the Life after Stroke event which highlighted the difficulties that could be faced by people affected by stroke.

“It’s really important that people are made aware of the traumatic and immediate impact of a stroke and how it can affect people physically and emotionally.  Life After Stroke Support Groups provide excellent local services, thereby helping people to readjust to life after a stroke.”

Mrs Evans added:

“I was delighted to see so many people present at our event including the Vale MP, Alun Cairns and AM Jane Hutt showing, by their presence, their support for the Stroke Association’s campaign of ‘Life after Stroke’. Our main aim at this event was to raise awareness of the impact of stroke and the need to reach out to many more stroke survivors. Additionally, we were successful in raising £628 to improve stroke support services.”
