An unusual pairing

April 16, 2012

Traditional political adversaries, local MP, Alun Cairns and the Shadow Chancellor, Ed Balls will join forces to run the London Marathon this weekend.Alun Cairns is running to raise money for Mind in the Vale and Atal y Fro, (Vale Women’s Aid) and Ed Balls is running for Whiz Kids based in Morley and Outwood.  Although they regularly disagree across the House of Commons Chamber, both were keen to show cross party support for their local charities.

Alun Cairns said:

“The number of MPs planning to run the Marathon has dropped off because of injuries and time commitments but I am delighted that some of us have managed to stay well and to fit in the training.

“MIND does so much for people with mental health problems, ranging from a shoulder to cry on and help with benefit applications.  We have worked together to help influence legislation for the benefit people with mental health needs.

“I have also had the privilege of seeing the first class support offered by Atal y Fro, the Vale’s Women’s Aid.  The really come into their own when some domestic violence victims are at their most vulnerable.

If anyone wishes to sponsor me, they can do so here or simply by contacting my office in Barry on 403814.”
