Vale MP scales the mast at The Tallships Festival

September 7, 2011

Vale MP Alun Cairns reached the top of the festival as he scaled the height of the mast on The Tall Ship Stavros S Niarchos at the Waterfront in Barry last weekend.

This year’s Tall Ships Festival included visits from The Tall Ship Stavros S Niarchos, The Matthew and the Royal Navy minehunter HMS Blyth.  There was also music from a range of Welsh artists and a host of craft and food stalls.

Mr Cairns met Peter Coleman, the Wales and South East Wales Trustee for the Tall Ships Youth Trust who explained that the Trust support and improve the lives of young people through the sailing experiences on board the Tall Ship  vessels.  Mr Coleman invited the local MP to climb the main mast on the Stavros S Niarchos – a challenge Mr Cairns was happy to accept.

Mr Cairns said:

“The Tall Ships Festival at the Waterfront in Barry is a fantastic two day event, for all the family to enjoy.

“The work The Tall Ships Youth Trust undertakes in delivering great experiences and developing skills and self-esteem for young people through sail training is remarkable.  The opportunity to climb the main mast of the Stavros, gave me a taste of the kind of fantastic experiences that the charity provides for young people.

“I hope we’ll see the Tall Ships returning to Barry Waterfront next year, it’s one that will certainly be in my calendar not to be missed.  Congratulations to all who helped and took part in the festival and thanks of course to the Trust for supporting the event.”
